Mealworms are a great protein source for wild birds, especially during the breeding months when they've got extra mouths to feed! In particular, bluebirds and orioles are more likely to frequent and hang around your feeders if you regularly offer mealworms. Even in the cooler times of year, like Winter, you can still offer mealworms! Birds like cardinals, chickadees, and blue jays also enjoy these tasty little treats!
In extreme cold, live mealworms won't survive long. While the birds likely will still eat them, you may consider offering dried mealworms on these days and saving your live ones for sunnier days.

Keeping Mealworms as Feeders

Mealworms can be kept in the refrigerator to extend the amount of time they remain in a larval state. Quite often the container they arrive in is sufficient, however for larger quantities you may want to provide a slightly larger container. Fill the container with 1"-2" of oats, and provide a slice of apple or carrot. Mealworms can be kept for several weeks this way. In the fridge they won't eat much, but refresh the apple/carrot as necessary.
